Abstract
In order to ensure high quality of the lingware (Natural Language Engineering Product), efficient software design, and cost-effective product development, it has generally been recognized during the past years that reusable lexical resources are a key issue Arguing from a software engineering point of view, we present and discuss in the following the idea of compiling application specific lexica on the basis of a standardized lexical database as elaborated in the ESPRIT II project MULTILEX. In contrast to work focusing on either one of two classical aspects of reusability, the compilation approach is intended to integrate both aspects, and to optimally support the design of natural language products and deals with the entire life-cycle of the lingware engineering related to electronic dictionaries.
